I’m Joy Matthews. I create functional glass art that brings both beauty and warmth to everyday life through the form of lanterns and dishes. Each piece is thoughtfully crafted to blend artistic expression with practicality, inviting viewers to appreciate both the materials and the techniques used in their creation.
My lanterns feature seamless stained glass patterns of my own design, incorporating abstract forms with organic flow. These patterns highlight the distinctive qualities of the art glass, such as its color, texture, and the interplay of light. The glass is chosen for its unique characteristics, allowing each lantern to radiate warmth and transform its surroundings. The bodies of the lanterns are crafted from basswood, with a simple, linear design that contrasts with and complements the fluidity of the stained glass, creating a balanced aesthetic of natural simplicity and intricate craftsmanship.
For my dishes, I employ a pressed glass technique where molten glass is forced to blend and flow, creating dynamic color gradients and a sense of movement within each piece. This technique allows the colors to organically merge, producing rich, nuanced effects that capture light in a way that adds depth and interest to everyday use.
Through my work, I aim to add warmth and visual intrigue to any home. My work is intended not just as functional art, but as a means to elevate ordinary moments, inviting both beauty and serenity into daily life.
